Mandelion Genetics

TermDefinition
Alleles one of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Homozygous having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Heterozygous having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Genetics how certain qualities or traits are passed from parents to offspring as a result of changes in DNA sequence.
Genes A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes are made up of DNA. Some genes act as instructions to make molecules called proteins.
Genotype genetic makeup of an organism; in other words, it describes an organism's complete set of genes.
Phenotype the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
Dominant dominance is the phenomenon of one variant of a gene on a chromosome masking or overriding the effect of a different variant of the same gene on the other copy of the chromosome.
Recessive relating to or denoting heritable characteristics controlled by genes that are expressed in offspring only when inherited from both parents. when not masked by a dominant characteristic inherited from one parent.
Heredity the passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another.
