| ecosystem | all the living and nonliving things that interact with one another in a given area |
| biome | a large group of ecosystems |
| climate | the normal pattern of weather that occurs in an area over a long period of time (precipitation and temperature are two measures of this) |
| food chain | a description of how energy flows in an ecosystem from one source to another |
| food web | a description of multiple food chains in an ecosystem |
| producer | an organism that makes its own food (energy) through photosynthesis |
| consumer | an organism that gets energy by eating food, not producing it |
| decomposer | an organism that gets its energy by consuming biotic material and "recycling" nutrients into the soil |
| photosynthesis | the process by which plants use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars and oxygen |
| population | all the members of the same species living in an ecosystem |
| symbiosis | a close, long-lasting relationship between two species |
