ecosystem all the living and nonliving things that interact with one another in a given area
biome a large group of ecosystems
climate the normal pattern of weather that occurs in an area over a long period of time (precipitation and temperature are two measures of this)
food chain a description of how energy flows in an ecosystem from one source to another
food web a description of multiple food chains in an ecosystem
producer an organism that makes its own food (energy) through photosynthesis
consumer an organism that gets energy by eating food, not producing it
decomposer an organism that gets its energy by consuming biotic material and "recycling" nutrients into the soil
photosynthesis the process by which plants use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars and oxygen
population all the members of the same species living in an ecosystem
symbiosis a close, long-lasting relationship between two species
