Genetics Vocabulary

Basic Genetics Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Allele refers to the different versions of a gene
Genotype refers to the genetic makeup of an individual (represented by two letters, e.g. AA, Aa, or aa)
Phenotype refers to the physical traits of an organism (e.g., blue eyes, black hair)
Homozygous a condition in which the two alleles for a particular trait are the same (e.g., BB or bb)
Heterozygous a condition in which the two alleles for a particular trait are different (e.g., Bb)
Dominant the trait that is always visible and expressed when present
Recessive the trait that is only visible and expressed when present in the homozygous form
