1. DESCRIBE a biological process by which carbon is removed from the atmosphere and converted to organic molecules | photosynthesis - CO2 is converted into glucose by the plants so that they can use it for energy, then the consumers eat the plants to get their carbons and energy as well (carbon fixation is when it goes from inorganic to organic through photosynthesis) |
2. DESCRIBE a BIOLOGICAL (not combustion) process by which carbon is converted from organic molecules to a gas and returned to the atmosphere | respiration - glucose is broken down into CO2 by animals who take O2 produced by plants and release CO2 back into the atmosphere |
3. IDENTIFY an environmental problem that results from elevated atmospheric carbon concentrations | higher levels of CO2 in the atmosphere leads to more trapped heat around the earth which leads to global warming |
3. DISCUSS one consequence of the problem you identified | coral reef bleaching, ice melting, rising sea level, disruption of food chains, extinction of species |
(i) DESCRIBE one major way in which the phosphorus cycle differs from the carbon cycle | P has no atmospheric component No P goes into the air |
(ii) IDENTIFY one reason that phosphorus is necessary for organisms | forms ATP, phospholipids, DNA/RNA |
a) name of process occurring at I in diagram of N2---> converted into N containing compounds | nitrogen fixation |
b) name of process occurring at II N containing compounds ----> N2 in atmosphere | denitrification |
c) name two organic molecules requiring N | DNA, RNA, amino acid, protein (all or none) |
d) explain the role of bacteria in the N cycle | nitrogen fixation; turns N2 into organic molecules that can be absorbed into the roots of plants (NOT DECOMPOSITION) |
explain why lower levels of dissolved O2 result from excess fertilizers and agricultural sewage | 1. too much N/P leads to algae blooms 2. algae dies and settles at the bottom to be consumed by aerobic bacteria 3. fish die because there is not enough O2 after bacteria has used it all (premature eutlification) |
explain the importance of dissolved O2 in aquatic systems | organisms do cellular respiration (O2 into mitochondria which produces CO2) |
draw a diagram showing how electricity is generated using fossil fuels | coal or CH4 heating up H2O released as steam to turn a turbine which is attached to copper wires surrounded by magnets (generator) which releases e- |
identify two important environmental laws passed and dicuss their importance | clean air act clean water act montreal protocol endangered species act |
clean air act | - establishes federal standards for sources of air pollution and their fuels/sources of air pollutants - establishes a cap-and-trade program for the emissions that cause acid rain - comprehensive permit system for all major sources of air pollution. |
clean water act | - establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulating quality standards for surface waters - unlawful to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters |
Montreal Protocol | - international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion |
endangered species act | - adding a species to the federal lists of endangered and threatened wildlife and plants. - designating critical habitat. - developing protective regulations for threatened species. - developing and implementing recovery plans for listed species. |
