ECE3-07 Causes and Effects of Stress on Young Children

TermDefinition
Overstimulation Being overwhelmed physically or emotionally by surrounding such as crowds, loud music or other sounds, bright light, etc.
Hypersensitivity Children who are very sensitive to the emotions of others, light, sound, touch, movement, temperature, or clothing. Also possibly anything they see, hear, feel, taste, smell or otherwise experience.
Hyposensitivity Children who tend not to notice the emotions of others, light, sound, touch, movement, temperature, or clothing. Also possibly anything they see, hear, feel, taste, smell or otherwise experience.
Poverty Living in a family situation where household income is below national standards. (less than $24,250 for a family of 4)
Hunger Living with a chronic shortage of sufficient nutritious food
Pain/Chronic Illness Any condition that causes a child to experience ongoing pain or illness
Family changes/instability Divorce, Separation, Geographic moves, and other major changes
Loss/death The loss of an important friend or family member
Bullying Being threatened, coerced, abused or intimidated on an ongoing basis.
Violence/Terrorism Any family, neighborhood, or other threat of danger or harm
Excessive expectation Academic, sports or other pressure from parents to perform.
Evidence of Stress in children Negative changes in learning, behavior, or health due to stress in their lives
Responses from teacher/caregiver Kindness, understanding, patience and support and encouragement should be the responses of teachers or caregivers
