| Term | Definition |

| Curriculum | A detailed guide of what is to be taught to a class or group of students. |
| Chronological Grouping | Grouping students based on their age. |
| Developmental Grouping | Grouping students based on their ability in some area of development. |
| Lesson Plan | A detailed written record of steps, questions, and materials needed by teacher to teach a particular topic or standard. |
| Learning Objective | The 3 part statement of the learning goal for a lesson. (conditions of performance, observable behavior, and level of performance) |
| Assessment | A tool used to evaluate learning or understanding. |
| Unit Plan | A guide or overview for several days or weeks of study or teaching. |
| Manipulative | A 3 dimensional object that students can touch or hold to facilitate learning. |
| Focus Object | Item that students can see to help them concentrate the topic of the day. |
| Introduction | A quote, statement, or question used to begin a lesson. |
| Open Ended Materials | Teaching tools that encourage creativity. |
| Closed Ended Materials | Teaching tools that require a particular product or result. |
| Thematic Unit | A segment of study tied to a certain motif. |
| Head Start Model | A government funded preschool provided specifically to low income families which offers longer hours, additional supports such as teeth brushing, home visits, parenting classes, and contracts with famlies |
| Montessori Method | Known for sensory learning, learning independence and self reliance, allowing children to choose work and work at their own pace. |
| Reggio Emilia Approach | Developed after World War II based on the idea that curiosity is the best motivation for learning. No set curriculum, based on interests. |
| High Scope Approach | Believed that children learn best through hands-on experiences with people, materials, events, and ideas. Plan, do, review. |
| GELDS | Georgia Early Learning & Development Standards- the knowledge & skills children need to be prepared for kindergarten |
