ECE1-06a Prenatal & Birth
Term | Definition |

Obstetrician | A doctor who specializes in pregnant women and the delivery of babies |
Prenatal care | The doctor appointments that a mother goes to and the healthcare she receives while pregnant |
Sperm | The male reproductive cell |
Egg | The female reproductive cell |
Ovulation | The release by the ovary of one egg cell approximately once a month |
Fertilization | The joining of the sperm and egg cell that begins the growth of the zygote |
Zygote | The joined egg and sperm cell for the first two weeks |
Embryo | What the "baby" is called during the second stage of pregnancy from week 3 until week 8 |
Fetus | What the "baby" is called during the third stage of pregnancy from week 9 until delivery |
Placenta | A tissue in the uterus of a pregnant woman rich in blood vessels that brings food and oxygen to the baby and helps to rid the baby of waste |
Amniotic Fluid | Clear liquid that surrounds the baby inside the uterus during pregnancy |
Uterus | The woman's reproductive organ where the baby grows during pregnancy |
Gestation | A period of 38-40 weeks during which a baby grows from two cells to a viable baby (3- three month trimesters) |
Complication | A difficulty in delivery that can threaten the baby or the mother |
Ultrasound | A prenatal test that uses sound waves to look at the forming baby before birth |
Amniocentesis | A prenatal test in which a needle removes amniotic fluid to test for many birth defects |
Birth Canal | The passageway from the uterus to the outside that a baby must travel to be born naturally |
Cervix | The lower part of the uterus that must open to about 4 inches (which is 10 centimeters) for the baby to be delivered |
Umbilical Cord | The long tube that connects the baby's belly button to the placenta |
Delivery | The 3 stage process when baby leaves the uterus (contractions, delivery, after pains) |
Miscarriage | The unexpected death of a developing baby before 20 weeks of gestation |
Still Birth | The unexpected death of a developing baby after 20 weeks of gestation |
Cesarean delivery (or sometimes called C-section | Is a surgical way for a baby to be delivered through an incision in the abdomen |
Viability | The age at which a fetus can live if delivered (able to survive apart from the mother) |
Birth Defects | Serious problems present at birth that can be serious and threaten a newborn's health or ability to live |
Chorionic Villi Sampling | It is a prenatal diagnostic test that involves taking a small sample of tissue from the placenta, the organ that connects the developing baby to the mother. This tissue is then examined to detect genetic abnormalities or other health conditions in the fetus. |
Isolette | A special bed used for a premature baby that imitates the mothers womb: warm, moist and isolated from light and sound |
Plasticity | The ability of an infant's brain to change according to stimulation |
