ECE2-08 Communicable Illness
| Term | Definition |

| Antibodies | Substances produced by the immune system that when released into the blood help destroy disease-causing organisms. |
| Child Abuse | Non accidental injury inflicted on a child. |
| Child Neglect | Failure to provide the basic necessities of life, including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. |
| Communicable Disease | Infectious disease that can be passed from person to person. |
| Grand Mal Seizure | A complete loss of consciousness, with stiffening, jerking, or thrashing of the body. |
| Immune System | A bodily system that produces antibodies. |
| Immunization | A vaccine given orally or through a shot to protect a person from disease. |
| Infectious disease | Illness that enters the body and damages tissue. |
| Noncommunicable disease | Infectious disease that does not pass from person to person. |
| Pathogens | Disease-causing organisms, such as bacteria and viruses. |
| Petite mal seizure | Small seizure that last for a couple of seconds of consciousness with muscle twitches. |
| Vaccine | A small amount of disease that is usually injected into you so the body can build resistance. |
| Common Communicable Illness | Hepatitis. (Viral hepatitis causes 78% of liver cancers and the hepatitis B virus alone infects an estimated one in three people worldwide.)...HIV/AIDS...Influenza...Malaria....Polio....Tuberculosis. |
| Common childhood Illnesses | Chickenpox, Colds, Coughs,Croup, Diarrhea, Ear Infections Fever or Chills, Lice, Pinkeye, Pinworms, Scabies, Warts and Plantar Warts |
| 4 Stages of Illness | The incubation stage (silent stage-- the pathogen begins growth) The prodromal stage (itchy, runny nose, dry eyes, etc.) The peak stage (severe aches, chills, vomiting, etc.) The recovery stage (symptoms are minimal) |
| Methods of Transmission | Contact (Direct-physical touch, Indirect-item touch, Droplet-sneeze) Noncontact (airborne, vehicle-point source, vector borne insect/animal) |
| Carrier | person who has an illness and is contagious but has not developed symptoms yet |
| Incubation Period | time during which a person has been infected before symptoms appear |
| Patient Zero | the first infected person in a disease outbreak |
| Transmissibility | how contagious an illness is: how many people are likely to be infected by each sick person |
