ECE2-10 CPR and First Aid Certifications
| Term | Definition |

| CPR | (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) helping to support respiration for someone who had no heartbeat or is not breathing |
| Civilian First Responder | the person on the scene of an accident or incident that is trained to assist in an emergency |
| EMS | Emergency Medical Services - the system that provides help in cases of emergency when we dial 911 |
| Shock | Lack of blood circulation to organs and tissues |
| Tourniquet | tight bands used to completely stop the blood flow to a wound |
| Splint | device used to immobilize a possible fractured bone |
| Poisoning | any substance that interferes with normal body function |
| Anaphylaxis | a life threatening allergic reaction. symptoms are: wheezing, hives, low blood pressure. |
| Respiratory distress | difficulty breathing |
| Soft Tissue injuries | damage to muscles ligaments and tendons |
| Epinephrine Auto Injector (EPI pen) | premeasured dose of epinephrine that anyone can administer to help relieve allergic reaction |
| Hyperventilation | rapid or shallow breathing that can endanger a persons oxygen levels |
| Stroke | a blood clot that forms and interferes with healthy circulation |
| Asthma | a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway |
| Seizures | abnormal electric activity in the brain, can cause shaking, loss of body control and loss of consciousness |
| The Good Samaritan Law | a law that protects anyone who attempts to help in an emergency situation against liability suits |
| Recovery (Side) Position | a body position used to help stabilize a person who is unconscious |
| Rescue Breathing | a life saving maneuver where rescuer inflates the lungs of the victim by breathing into the airway |
| Diabetes | an inability of the body to manage or produce insulin |
| Heat related illness | physical symptoms that result from dehydration and an usual rise in body temperature |
| Lyme Disease | An infection transmitted by the bite of an infected tick |
| Control of Bleeding | Pressure on cut, elevation (above heart) of affected area |
| Heimlich Maneuver | a quick thrust into the abdomen of a choking victim used to dislodge the object causing the choking |
| Frostbite | injury to tissue due to over exposure to cold temperatures |
| Hypothermia | a potentially fatal condition where the internal body temperature falls below 95 degrees |
| Allergies (common in children) | Peanuts, other nuts, stings, etc. that can cause Anaphylaxis |
| AED (Automated external defibrillator) | a battery powered device that can shock a persons heart to restart it during cardiac arrest |
| Glove removal | removal of gloves from wrist, while never touching the outside of the gloves |
| Stroke risk factors | high blood pressure, overweight, sedentary life style |
| Signals of Shock | pale appearance, feeling weak, cool to touch, disorientation |
| Non Responsive | a person who does not move, speak, blink or otherwise respond when you speak to them or tap their shoulders. |
| Assess Scene Safety | Looking around the area where a sick or injured person is to check for anything that can pose a danger to you or the injured person. (traffic, water, electricity, falling, etc.) |
| Universal Precautions | wearing gloves/masks/googles and other protective gear while providing care to avoid contact with bodily fluids |
