Biology Chapter 8A
Part 1 of Chapter 8 Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) → ADP | a molecule that carries energy within cells, cells use to store and release energy |
| Heterotrophs | organism that obtains food by consuming other living things (consumer) |
| Autotrophs | organism that is able to capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food from inorganic compounds (primary producer) |
| Photosynthesis | the process in which light energy is converted to chemical energy in the form of sugars |
| Pigments | light-absorbing molecules used by plants to gather the sun’s energy |
| Chlorophyll | principal pigment that gives plants their green color and captures light energy |
| Thylakoids | saclike photosynthetic membranes found in chloroplasts, site of photosynthesis |
| Stroma | fluid portion of the chloroplast; outside of the thylakoids |
| NADP+ (reducing agent) | carrier molecule (and coenzyme) that carries energized electrons and hydrogen atoms to be converted into NADPH |
| Light-dependent reactions/Light reactions | reactions in photosynthesis that use energy from light to produce ATP and NADPH |
