| shelter | place of protection from weather or danger |
| habitat | physical and biotic factors that are present in an area, such as to support the survival and reproduction |
| invasive species | species introduced to a population and can increase competition for the same resources as native organisms |
| native species | original population native to an area |
| genetic traits | with reproductive success, adaptations can be passed onto the next generation |
| environmental pressures | factors that can cause environmental change |
| arid | land or a climate having little or no rain; too dry or barren to support vegetation |
| precipitation | any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth |
| primary consumer | consume only producers; herbivores |
| secondary consumer | consume primary consumers |
| tertiary consumer | consume secondary consumers; carnivores |
| omnivore | consume plants and animals |
| carnivore | animals that eat other animals; only eat consumers |
| predator/prey relationship | Predator: an animal that kills and eats other animals Prey: animals that are killed and eaten by other animals |
| camouflage | disguise to hide or blend in with surroundings |
| chemical defense | such as stench, or poisons and venoms that make consumers not want to eat them |
| mimicry | looking like or behaving like something that is dangerous |
| limited resources | in harsh environments with high competition means not enough resources for all organisms in the area |
| salinity | saltiness or amount of salt dissolved in a body of water |
| tolerate | to handle and still function properly |
