Common terms used when discussing the evidence for common ancestry

| Comparative | A comparison between two or more traits, species or characteristics. |
| Anatomy | The branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of living organisms. |
| Embryology | A branch of biology that is related to the formation, growth, and development of embryos. |
| Ancestry | An organism's origin or descent, from a previous organism. |
| Homologous | Having the same typical structure and position. |
| Analogous | Similar in function but having different evolutionary origins. |
| Vestigial | Structures that have no apparent function and appear to be residual parts from a past ancestor. |
| Cladogram | A branching diagram which shows the relationships between different groups of species. |
