Unit 6 Cell Cycle

TermDefinition
cell division the process in reproduction and growth by which a cell divides to form daughter cells
asexual reproduction process of reproduction involving a single parent that results in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent
sexual reproduction type of reproduction in which cells from two parents unite to form the first cell of a new organism
chromosomes a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
chromatin Substance found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of DNA tightly coiled around histones
chromatid one half of a duplicated chromosome
cell cycle series of events in which a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter cells
interphase Cell grows, performs its normal functions, and prepares for division; consists of G1, S, and G2 phases
mitosis cell division in which the nucleus divides into nuclei containing the same number of chromosomes
cytokinesis division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells
centromere the region of the chromosome that holds the two sister chromatids together during mitosis
cancer A disease in which some body cells grow and divide uncontrollably, damaging the parts of the body around them.
growth factors stimulate the growth and division of cells
cyclin one of a family of proteins that regulates the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells
tumor mass of rapidly dividing cells that can damage surrounding tissue
homologous chromosomes that are the same size and shape
diploid containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
haploid (genetics) an organism or cell having only one complete set of chromosomes
meiosis a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, as in the production of gametes and plant spores.
crossing over exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis
somatic cells any cell of a living organism other than the reproductive cells.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
