| endosymbiosis | theory on how chloroplasts and mitochondria originated; states that early cells took in prokaryotes that developed into symbiotic organelles |
| embryo | stage of early development in an organism, after zygote stage (more than a cell) but before fetus stage (not all organs formed yet) |
| fungi | kingdom of organisms that is eukaryotic (cells have nuclei), heterotrophic (consumes food by absorption), and cells have cell walls |
| photosynthesis | process of building food molecules (carbs) from carbon dioxide in air and water, powered by energy from sunlight |
| cellular respiration | process of breaking down food molecules (carbs) to release their energy, which is used to build ATP (creates CO2 as waste) |
| transpiration | process where plants convert liquid water into water vapor (gas), which escapes through leaf stomata into the atmosphere |
| carrying capacity | how many of an organism a particular ecosystem can support, considering resources available and pressures |
| succession | the change over time in what species occupy an ecosystem; each species alters its environment which allows other species to come in and out-compete them |
| pathogen | something that causes infectious disease (bacteria, virus, or other parasite) |
| antibodies | proteins that immune cells make and release to attach to and combat pathogens |
