cancer when mutations cause a cell to grow/divide uncontrollably, which harms the body
mutation an error during DNA replication that changes the sequence of ACTGs in the cell's DNA
meiosis cell division that creates gametes (nonidentical haploid daughter cells for sexual reproduction)
genetic variation differences in DNA sequences among members of a species (important for long-term survival of species)
heterozygous the two alleles for a particular gene have competing genetic instructions
homozygous the two alleles for a particular gene have the same genetic instructions
codominance when heterozygous, both traits are expressed in spotted/speckled pattern
homologous of the same kind (like chromosomes in a nucleus, or like anatomical structures in evolution)
evolution change in allele frequences / gene frequencies in a population over generations
natural selection cause of evolution where traits that give an advantage become more common in the population over generations
