| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cancer | when mutations cause a cell to grow/divide uncontrollably, which harms the body |
| mutation | an error during DNA replication that changes the sequence of ACTGs in the cell's DNA |
| meiosis | cell division that creates gametes (nonidentical haploid daughter cells for sexual reproduction) |
| genetic variation | differences in DNA sequences among members of a species (important for long-term survival of species) |
| heterozygous | the two alleles for a particular gene have competing genetic instructions |
| homozygous | the two alleles for a particular gene have the same genetic instructions |
| codominance | when heterozygous, both traits are expressed in spotted/speckled pattern |
| homologous | of the same kind (like chromosomes in a nucleus, or like anatomical structures in evolution) |
| evolution | change in allele frequences / gene frequencies in a population over generations |
| natural selection | cause of evolution where traits that give an advantage become more common in the population over generations |
