| cell theory | current scientific theory (much evidence) that states all living things are made of cells; cells are the lowest organization level ("most basic") that is alive; cells come from the division of already existing cells |
| prokaryotic | organisms/cells that lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles (bacteria) |
| eukaryotic | organisms/cells that contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles (plants, animals, fungi, protists) |
| cell membrane | the double layer of phospholipids that surrounds and encloses a cell; contains other molecules between the phospholipids that give specific functions like transport proteins |
| ATP | the energy currency molecule used in cells; ADP is low-energy but add another phosphate to make ATP and it's high-energy, break off a phosphate to release energy |
