ALL SCIENTIFIC METHOD TERMS

Scientific method Logical steps in problem solving
Variable Anything that can change in an experiment
Constant Variables that stay the same
Control Standard of comparison (what we compare our results to)
Experiment Testing a hypothesis
Dependent variable Responds to change; what we measure
Hypothesis Possible explanation that can be tested
Independent variable The variable that “I Change.” What is purposefully changed by experimenter.
Inference Inference Guess based on observation/prior knowledge
Law Scientific concept or idea that is accepted, proven with evidence
Theory Scientific concept or idea that is accepted, but cannot be proven 100% as true.
Mean Average = add up all numbers and divide by number of values.
Observation Using the 5 senses to obtain data
Optimum Most, highest, best.
Prediction Forecasting the future
Data Information
Qualitative data Information that Describes qualities, characteristics, & descriptions
Quantitative data Information that is displayed as numbers, & measurements
Range Data from Lowest to highest (from one end to another)
Accuracy Exact measurements
Precision Repeated consistent measurements
