ALL SCIENTIFIC METHOD TERMS

| Scientific method | Logical steps in problem solving |
| Variable | Anything that can change in an experiment |
| Constant | Variables that stay the same |
| Control | Standard of comparison (what we compare our results to) |
| Experiment | Testing a hypothesis |
| Dependent variable | Responds to change; what we measure |
| Hypothesis | Possible explanation that can be tested |
| Independent variable | The variable that “I Change.” What is purposefully changed by experimenter. |
| Inference | Inference Guess based on observation/prior knowledge |
| Law | Scientific concept or idea that is accepted, proven with evidence |
| Theory | Scientific concept or idea that is accepted, but cannot be proven 100% as true. |
| Mean | Average = add up all numbers and divide by number of values. |
| Observation | Using the 5 senses to obtain data |
| Optimum | Most, highest, best. |
| Prediction | Forecasting the future |
| Data | Information |
| Qualitative data | Information that Describes qualities, characteristics, & descriptions |
| Quantitative data | Information that is displayed as numbers, & measurements |
| Range | Data from Lowest to highest (from one end to another) |
| Accuracy | Exact measurements |
| Precision | Repeated consistent measurements |
