Taxonomy

Taxonomy and Classification Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Taxonomy Science of classifying organisms.
Taxonomist Scientist that identify, name and classify organisms.
Taxon Taxa-plural. Category into which related organisms are classified.
Classification Is the arrangement of organisms into orderly groups based on their similarities (characteristics).
Hierarchical classification All living organisms are classified into several categories based on similarities between them and other species. These categories are domains, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.
Binomial nomenclature Two-word name (Genus & species).
