| asexual reproduction | reproduction in which the offspring are identical to the parent |
| sexual reproduction | reproduction in which two parents combine to form a genetically unique offspring |
| DNA | the genetic material found in cells |
| chromosome | a thread-like structure composed of DNA and proteins |
| chromatids | one half of a duplicated chromosome that is identical to the other half |
| centromere | the location on a chromosome where two chromatids are held together |
| chromatin | DNA and proteins that wind up to form chromosomes |
| interphase | the part of the cell cycle in which DNA in duplicated and the cell carries out its normal functions |
| mitosis | the phase of the cell cycle in which the nucleus divides |
| cytokinesis | the phase of the cell cycle in which the cell divides |
| prophase | the first phase of mitosis in which the nucleus breaks down and chromosomes condense and become visible |
| methaphase | the second phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up in the center of the cell |
| anaphase | the third phase of mitosis in which the chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell. |
| telophase | the last phase of mitosis in which new nuclear membranes form around the chromosomes |
