Chapter 15.3
Linked Genes
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| linked genes | genes located on the same chromosomes that tend to be inherited together in genetic crossover -don't assort independently |
| genetic recombination | when the parental genes are mixed and matched so the offspring have non-parent phenotypes |
| when does genetic recombination form? | form during prophase of meiosis 1 because of the crossing over of homologous chromosomes, occasionally breaks the physical connection between genes on sam chromosome |
| recombinant chromosomes | new combinations in gametes -random fertilization increase # of variant combos produced = genetic variation from which natural selection works |
| genetic map | an ordered list of the genetic loci along a particular chromosome -farther apart 2 genes on a chromosome, the higher the probability cross occurs between them, so the higher recombinant frequency |
| linkage map | a genetic map based on recombination frequencies -genetically unlinked and behave as if diff chromosome |
| cytogenic map | locates genes with respect to chromosomal features, such as stained bands that can be seen in microscope |
