Important plant parts and plant processes

| glucose | a type of sugar produced by plants that the plants use as food |
| photosynthesis | the process in which plants use water, energy from the sun and carbon dioxide and chlorophyll to produce oxygen and create glucose |
| roots | the part of the plant that absorbs water, keeps the plant in place, and stores food |
| stems | the part of the plant that helps it stay upright and acts as a transport system |
| leaves | the part of the plant where most photosynthesis takes place |
| stomata | small openings on the surface of a plant's leaves that allow carbon dioxide to enter and oxygen to leave |
| chlorophyll | a substance in plant cells that absorbs energy from the sun and makes plants green |
| xylem | a one way system that moves water and minerals up into the plant |
| phloem | a two way transport system that moves food throughout the plant or into the roots for storage |
| transpiration | the loss of water through the plants leaves |
| cellular respiration | the process in which energy is released from food (sugar) inside a cell |
| germination | when a seed first starts to grow |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| energy | the ability to do work or make something happen |
