| Primary Succession | occurs when bare surfaces or waters that have never hosted life are available for colonization |
| Secondary Succession | occurs when existing ecosystems have been disturbed and must be recolonized by living things |
| Soil | a mixture of minerals, air, water and organic matter that is a necessary building block in primary succession |
| Pioneer Community | the first living things to arrive in a new or recently disturbed habitat |
| Climax Community | the various species of more complex plants, animals, and fungi that are last to take residence in an ecosystem that is mature and stable |
| Intermediate Community | exist between the stages of a pioneer community ecosystem and a climax community ecosystem. |
| Keystone Species | organisms who are vital to the stability of an ecosystem and the survival of other species |
| Endemic Species | organisms that are unique to a specific geographic location |
| Biodiversity | a measure of the variety that can be found in an ecosystem |
| Indicator Species– | organisms whose presence or absence reflects on the health and condition of an ecosystem |
| Endangered Species | organisms who are at risk of extinction |
