Taxonomy naming, describing, and classification of all organisms based on shared characteristics (changes as new discoveries are made)
Binomial nomenclature classification system in which each species is assigned a two-part scientific name
Genus group of closely related species (similar characteristics)6; the first part of the scientific name in binomial nomenclature
Taxa group or level of organization into which organisms are classified (“Taxon” but plural ver.)
Family in classification, a group of similar genera (genus) (above genus)
Order in classification, a group of closely related families (above family)
Class in classification, a group of closely related orders (above order)
Phylum (pl. phyla) in classification, a group of closely related classes
Kingdom largest and most inclusive group in Linnaean classification (made up of phyla)
Phylogeny the history of the evolution of a species or group, especially in reference to lines of descent and relationships among broad groups of organisms
