| Taxa | group or level of organization into which organisms are classified (“Taxon” but plural ver.) |
| Family | in classification, a group of similar genera (genus) (above genus) |
| Order | in classification, a group of closely related families (above family) |
| Class | in classification, a group of closely related orders (above order) |
| Phylum | (pl. phyla) in classification, a group of closely related classes |
| Kingdom | largest and most inclusive group in Linnaean classification (made up of phyla) |
| Phylogeny | the history of the evolution of a species or group, especially in reference to lines of descent and relationships among broad groups of organisms |
