7th gr Adaptations

TermDefinition
DNA holds the “blueprint” for life; contains all the genetic material for an organism
genes small sections of DNA that code for proteins which determine traits
traits characteristics or an organism; the phenotype based on the genotype
offspring the children of parents; the next generation after parents
genetic variation organisms in a population have different codes for the same traits
generation time between the birth of an organism(s) until that organism(s) has offspring
population two or more of the same kind of organisms; i.e. human population
Selective breeding/artificial selection humans choosing organisms with particular characteristics to breed together and produce offspring with more desirable traits
breed organisms within a species that have a distinctive (special) appearance; i.e. great danes
advantages to artificial selection provide improvement to plants and animals; fruits can become seedless, vegetables can taste better, yields can be higher; new breeds
disadvantages to artificial selection can cause other health problems, genetic problems, obesity
natural selection a process of change over generations; survival of the fittest; best adapted survive and reproduce; nature driven process
survival to live; to continue living
adaptation a trait that increases an organism’s ability to survive in its environment
environment natural world; surroundings
reproduction process of making offspring; can be asexual or sexual

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
