organism a living thing
habitat The specific environment that provides the things an organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce.
biotic factor A living part of the organism's habitat.
abiotic factor A nonliving part of an organism's habitat.
photosynthesis The process in which some organisms use water along with sunlight and carbon dioxide to make their own food.
species A group of organisms that are physically similar and can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce.
population All members of one species in a particular area.
community All the different populations that live together in an area.
ecosystem The community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving surroundings.
ecology The study of how organisms interact with their environment.
Why do different organisms live in different habitats? Different kinds of organism have different requirements. Their habitats must meet their requirements.
Name a biotic factor in your environment. You should name another living organism such as a person, tree, dog, bird, grass, flower.
How do abiotic factors differ from biotic factors? Biotic factors are living; abiotic factors are nonliving.
What basic needs are provided by an organism's habitat? A habitat provides food, water, shelter, and other things an organism needs to grow and reproduce.
List these terms in order from the smallest level to the largest: population, organism, ecosystem, community. Organism, population, community, ecosystem.
