Biology Chapter 11B
Part 2 of Chapter 11 Vocab.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Homozygous | having two identical alleles for a particular gene (SAME) |
| Heterozygous | having two different alleles for a particular gene (DIFF) |
| Phenotype | physical (observable) characteristics of an organism |
| Genotype | genetic makeup of an organism (organism's complete set of genes) |
| Punnett square | diagram that can be used to predict the genotype and phenotype combinations of a genetic cross |
| Independent assortment | A Mendel’s principle that states how different genes and alleles independently separate from one another when reproductive cells (gametes) develop |
| Incomplete dominance | situation in which one allele is not completely dominant over another allele (when neither of two alleles is fully dominant nor recessive towards each other) |
| Codominance | situation in which the phenotypes produced by both alleles are completely expressed in a heterozygous |
| Multiple allele | a gene that has more than two alleles |
| Polygenic trait | trait controlled by two or more genes (like height, skin color and eye color) |
| Test-cross | a cross between the dominant phenotype with the recessive phenotype to determine whether or not the dominant trait is heterozygous |
