Genetics scientific study of heredity and genes
Hereditary the passing of genetic information and traits from parents to offspring
Fertilization process in sexual reproduction in which male (sperm) and female (egg) reproductive cells join to form a new cell (zygote)
Trait specific characteristic of an individual
Hybrid an offspring produced by organisms that differ in genetically determined traits also known as a cross between parents of different species
Gene segments of DNA that carry the instructions to make specific proteins that control a specific trait in the organism (basic unit of hereditary)
Allele variation/different forms of a gene (there are TWO - dominant and recessive)
Principle of dominance Mendel’s second conclusion, which states that some alleles are dominant and others are recessive
Segregation separation of two alleles during gamete formation
Gamete a sex cell
Probability likelihood/chance that a particular event will occur
