Menstrual Cycle

stages of female reproductive system

QuestionAnswer
Menstrual cycle is divided into how many stages 4 stages
Events of Ovarian cycle and Uterine cycle are regulated by Pituitary gonadotropins
FSH stimulates Primary follicles
Only one primary follicle continues to grow...the rest are degenerated
Degenerative process of primary follicles is called Follicle Atresia
The dominant follicle produces Estrogen hormone
The dominant follicle INHIBITs the secretion of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) from pituitary gland
Decrease of FSH & Increase of Estrogen, causes the Pituitary gland to secrete Luteinizing Hormone
luteinizing hormone (LH) induces Ovulation- Release of ovum ( egg ) from Follicle
Follicle cells after release of the egg, modifies into a special structure Corpus Luteum
Corpus Luteum is Yellowish glandular structure, stimulates the production of Progesterone
The Progesterone hormone develops the Endometrium- Internal lining of Uterus wall
corpus luteum starts degenerating If FERTILIZATION Does NOT occur
When progesterone secretion diminishes , its effect on spongy Endometrium is reduced which suffers a breakdown & causes low Progesterone by degeneration of Corpus Luteum causes the DISCHARGE of BLOOD and cell debris known as MENSTRUATION
Menstruation lasts for 3-7 days
The end or complete stop of the menstrual cycle is called Menopause
In menopause Female stops producing the Ova
