Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Trait | Each different form of a characteristic. Ex. hair color, eye color, height |
| Gene | The genetic instructions for an inherited trait, made up of DNA segments |
| Allele | different forms of a gene. |
| Dominant trait | Always appears in an organism when its allele is present. |
| Recessive Trait | Is hidden whenever the dominant allele is present. In order for this trait to be expressed it must be homozygous with itself. |
| Genotype | Combination of inherited alleles for a particular characteristic. |
| Homozygous/Purebred | Inheriting two dominant or two recessive alleles. |
| Heterozygous/Hybrids | Inheriting two different alleles. |
| Phenotype | An organisms expression of a particular trait. |
| Punnet Square | Chart which shows all possible gene combinations for a particular trait between two parents. |
| Carrier | An organism that is capable of passing on a trait without actually expressing it. |
