Intro to Heredity

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Trait Each different form of a characteristic. Ex. hair color, eye color, height
Gene The genetic instructions for an inherited trait, made up of DNA segments
Allele different forms of a gene.
Dominant trait Always appears in an organism when its allele is present.
Recessive Trait Is hidden whenever the dominant allele is present. In order for this trait to be expressed it must be homozygous with itself.
Genotype Combination of inherited alleles for a particular characteristic.
Homozygous/Purebred Inheriting two dominant or two recessive alleles.
Heterozygous/Hybrids Inheriting two different alleles.
Phenotype An organisms expression of a particular trait.
Punnet Square Chart which shows all possible gene combinations for a particular trait between two parents.
Carrier An organism that is capable of passing on a trait without actually expressing it.
