Levels of Organization in Ecology

TermDefinition
ecosystem All living an nonliving things in an environment
biotic factors living or once living things in an ecosystem (plants, trees, animals, insects etc.)
abiotic factors nonliving things in an ecosystem (rocks, water, sunlight, temperature etc.)
species a group of similar organisms that are able to make more of their own kind
population all members of one species in an environment
community all the living things in an environment
interact when organisms depend on each other for survival
predator Organism that hunts
prey Organism that is hunted
biosphere all parts of the earth where life can be found (land, water, and sky)
producer plants, trees and algae
consumer An organism that eats other organisms for survival.
herbivore eats only producers (plants)
carnivore eats only other consumers or animals
omnivore eats both plants and animals
organism a living thing
ecology the study of the relationships between living things and their surroundings, or environment.
sunlight provides light and heat to entire biosphere
life processes series of actions carried out in order for organism to live.
water the liquid that makes life on Earth possible.
habitat where an organism lives and gets food and water.
invasive species non-native organism (can be plants, animals, or bacteria) that cause harm to the environment
nutrients the substances in food that our bodies process to enable it to function
levels of organization the arrangement of smaller parts of any structure or system into larger ones and larger ones into still larger ones in hierarchy (individual organism, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere).
