Chapter 4

Organization and Regulation of Body Systems

QuestionAnswer
Four types of tissue; epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
Epithelial covering, lining organs/cavities
Connective throughout body
Functions of connective tissue; bind, support, transport, energy storage
Fibrous connective tissue; loose, dense
Cartilage; support, structure
Types of connective tissue; bone and blood
Three types of muscle; Cardiac, skeletal, smooth
Nervous tissue; brain, spinal cord, nerves
Epithelial tissue shapes; Squamous, cubodial, columnar
Squamous; Squished/flat; found on epidermis
Cubodial; cube-shaped; found in lining of kidney tubules
Columnar; column-shaped; found in digestive tract
Epithelial layers; simple and stratified
Simple layer; one layer
Stratified layer; multiple layers
Gland; makes and secretes a substance
Endocrine; releases hormones into the blood; pituitary gland
Exocrine; releases substances locally into ducts; sweat glands
Skin functions; protection, regulation body temperature, production of vitamin D, sensory protection
Epidermis; stratified squamous epithelium where outer layers are dead and slough off
Dermis; contains blood vessels, organs and nerves
Hypodermis that is under the skin; adipose
Melanocytes; melanin-producing cells
Melanin; pigment that protects from UV radiation
Melanoma; cancer melanocytes
Hair; warmth, protection
Nails; protection
Sebaceous glands; oil; make sebum, which moisturizes skin/hair
Sweat glands; regulate temperature by cooling
Anterior cavity; ventral/front
Posterior cavity; dorsal/back
Thoracic cavity; chest
Pleural cavity; lungs
Pericardial cavity; heart
Abdominal cavity; abdomen/pelvic
Cranial cavity; brain
Spinal cavity; spinal cord
Mucous membrane; open to the environment; produces mucus - traps pathogens
Serous membrane; covers organs/closed cavities
Synovial membrane; lines freely movable joints
Meninges membrane; three membranes around the brain and spinal cord
Homeostasis; maintains constant, optimal levels
Negative feedback; turns something off/down; sweating lowers temperature
Positive feedback; keeps pushing something in the same direction/ turns up the response

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
