Heredity
| Term | Definition |

| heredity | the passing of characteristics from parents to offspring |
| trait | each specific characteristic that can be passed on |
| genetics | the study of heredity |
| purebred | organism that is the offspring of many generations that have the same trait |
| gene | factors that control a trait |
| allele | different forms of the same gene |
| dominant | the allele who's trait is always shown |
| recessive | the allele who's trait is always hidden if the dominant allele is present |
| Probability | how likely it is for an event to occur |
| Punnett Square | a chart that shows all of the possible ways that alleles from parents can be inherited |
| Phenotype | an organism's physical appearance |
| Genotype | an organism's genetic make up |
| Homozygous | a genotype with two of the same alleles |
| Heterozygous | a genotype with two different alleles |
| Hybrid | another term for heterozygous |
| pedigree | a chart that shows how traits are passed through multiple generations |
| Gregor Mendel | The father of genetics- grew peas in the monastery |
| pea plants | The plant that Gregor used in his heredity experiments. |
| fertilization | joining of egg and sperm |
| 23 chromosomes | number of chromosomes in a human sex cell |
| 46 chromosomes | number of chromosomes in a human body cell |
| sexual reproduciton | offspring produced by the joining of genetic information from two parents |
| asexual reproduction | offspring produced from one parent |
| mitosis | cell division resulting in two body cells |
| meiosis | cell division resulting in sex cells |
