Chapter 16
DNA replication process Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Origins of replication | Beginning of DNA replication process. 2 DNA strands are separated and opens up a replication "bubble"" |
| Replication fork | Y shaped region where new DNA strands are elongated. Located at the end of replication bubble. |
| Helicase | Enzyme that untwists DNA at replication fork. |
| Single-strand binding | binding and stabilization of single-stranded DNA |
| Topoisomerase | corrects overwinding ahead of replication forks by breaking, swiveling, and rejoining DNA. |
| DNA polymerase | adds nucleotides to existing 3' end |
| RNA primer | the initial nucleotide strand |
| Primase | Enzyme that can start RNA chain from scratch and adds RNA nucleotides one at a time using parental DNA as a template. |
