Cell Membrane Test

Biology 1 Honors/Vieira

QuestionAnswer
Homeostasis The process of maintaining balance inside a cell
Selective Permeability The feature of the plasma membrane that keeps some substances out, and allows glucose and oxygen to move in.
Plasma Membrane A boundary between the cell and its environment, maintains selective permeability and homeostasis.
What separates prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells from the watery environment in which they exist? Plasma membrane
What makes up most of the molecules in the plasma membrane? Lipids
Which molecule has a glycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains, and a phosphate-containing compound? Phospholipid
What moves substances though the plasma membrane? Transport Proteins
What do you call two layers of phospholipids arranged tail-to-tail? Phospholipid bilayer
What is the phospholipid "sea" in which embedded substances float called? Fluid mosaic model (fluid lipids where proteins can move)
What moves small molecules across the plasma membrane using transport proteins? Facilitated diffusion
What involves water moving across the plasma membrane to the side with the greater solute concentration? Osmosis
What occurs when substances move against the concentration gradient; requires energy and the aid of carrier proteins? Active Transport (Requires ATP)
What occurs when the plasma membrane surrounds a large substance inside the cell and moves it outside the cell? Exocytosis(Requires ATP)
What is the condition that results when diffusion continues until the concentrations are the same in all areas? Dynamic Equilibrium
What occurs when the plasma membrane surrounds a large substance outside the cell and moves it inside the cell? Endocytosis(Requires ATP)
What type of solution has the same osmotic concentration as a cell's cytoplasm and doesn't shrink or swell a cell? Isotonic Solution
What solution causes a cell to shrivel and causes water to move out of a cell? Hypertonic Solution
What solution causes a cell to swell and has more water outside the cell than inside the cell? Hypotonic Solution
What is diffusion? The movement of a molecule from an area of high concentration of the molecule to an area with a lower concentration.
What is facilitated diffusion? The diffusion of solutes through transport proteins in the plasma membrane.
What is osmosis? It's the diffusion of water
In which direction does water move across membranes? Down the concentration gradient
What type of solution has a lower solute concentration? Hypotonic
What type of solution does plant cells require? Hypotonic
What type of solution does an animal cell require? Isotonic
What is cytolisis? When a cell bursts (Animal cells only)
What is plasmolysis? When a plant cell loses turgor pressure

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
