Respiratory and Circulatory System Review

What are the four parts to the circulatory system? heart, arteries, veins and capillaries
What are examples of respiratory diseases? asthma, emphysema, SARS, flu, bronchitis
What are example of blood vessels? Arteries, veins and capillaries
What are the two types of circulation of blood in the body? pulmonary and systemic
What are examples of cardiovascular problems? stroke, hypertension, heart attack and atherosclerosis
What is the main functions of blood? carry oxygen, nutrients and wastes; fight disease and regulate temperature
What are the four blood types? A, B, AB and O
How does inhaling happen? the diaphragm and rib muscles contract, and air enters the space inside your chest cavity.
What two systems work together during the process of respiration? respiratory and cardiovascular
What is the function of the heart? pump blood
What are the main components of blood? plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
What are the parts of the respiratory system? trachea, larynx, bronchi and bronchioles, pharynx, alveoli, lungs
Where is oxygen is passed from the lungs into the blood? alveoli
What is the diaphragm? a muscle that contracts to begin the process of inhaling
What happens if you don’t get the right blood type during a transfusion? it can be fatal
The pharynx is also called the _______ throat
What are alveoli? tiny air sacs in the lungs
What is the trachea? also called the windpipe and is the passageway from the mouth to the larynx
What are the upper chambers of the heart? atria (or atrium)
What happens for oxygen enters the blood? there is an exchange of gases between alveoli and capillaries
What are the lower chambers of the heart called? ventricles
Why do arteries have very thick walls? because the blood is pumped through them at a high pressure.
Why do capillaries have very thin walls? because they exchange nutrients, oxygen, wastes and carbon dioxide
Why do veins have valves? it keeps blood from flowing backwards because they sometimes have to go in an upward direction to get blood back to the heart
What carries blood away from the heart? Arteries
What carries blood to the heart? veins
What causes a heartbeat? the valves open and closing
What are very tiny blood vessels that allow stuff to pass between the blood and cells? Capillaries
