BIO LAB FINAL 1402P2

Plant Tissue

QuestionAnswer
3 types of plant tissue? ground, vascular and dermal tissue
Epidermis * dermal tissue * prevents water lost/ bacteria * thick red layer in roots, leaves and stems * outer most cell
Trichomes * dermal tissue * found in leaves * extra cells that protrude * used to protect plant from bugs ( kills them)
Guard cells * found in leaves * small with openings * regulates stomata ( gas exchange)
Root hairs * found in dermal tissue in roots * look for extra cells hanging out * increases surface area
Collenchyma * In leaves * between epidermis cells and vascular bundle * supporting tissue *living cell walls
Sclerenchyma * dead cell walls ( thick) * looks like red dots ( no holes) * on the outer edge of vascular bundle ( after pholem) * supporting tissue
Mesophyll * palisade & spongy parenchyma * Has chloroplasts in the cell * has photosynthetic abilities
Endodermis * In roots * Has a waxy layer(red layer) * regulates water that goes into xylem
Bundle Sheath * cells around vascular bundle * regulates the phleom
Cortex * In roots/ stems * outside the vascular bundle * used for storage
Pith * In roots/stem * inside vascular bundle * used for storage
Phloem * transport sugars and AA
Xylem * in leaves, roots and stems * big red cell with a big hole * transports water
Apical meristems * red cells at the tip * on shoots and roots * grows new cells at the tips and roots
Lateral meristems * line right inside the epidermis * helps in the growth of lateral roots *increases width of plant
Vascular Cambien * gives rise to xylem and phleom * found in stems * between phelom and xylem layers
Megagametophyte * multi-cellular * has egg cell * produced by megasporyophyte
Microgametophyte * produced by microsporyophyte * forms pollen * look for developing anther
