viruses
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| virus | - is simply a strand of DNA or RNA wrapped in a protein coat that pirates a host cell - lifeless - can't replicate w/out another cell |
| lytic cycle | - pathogenic viruses - replicate IMMEDIATELY - cause sickness |
| lysogenic cycle | - virus lies dormant inside your cell and incorporates in your DNA (hides in your DNA and replicates) - once it is activated it goes to the lytic cycle |
| in the lysogenic cycle... | the DNA of a phage is integrated into the host cell's chromosome as a provirus |
| retroviruses | carry an enzyme, reverse transcriptase, that catalyzes the synthesis of cDNA from the RNA template |
| in the lytic cycle... | the host cell is ruptured to release new viruses |
| only SOME RNA viruses ____ | are virulent and cause lysis of a host cell |
| RNA replicase | used to catalyze RNA replication |
| when a virulent phage attacks a bacterial cell... | only the DNA is injected into the cell |
| the retroviruses... | synthesize cDNA from the viral RNA |
| restriction endonucleases are useful in recombinant DNA techniques because they | cut DNA at specific sites |
