unicellular | single-celled |
multicellular | more than one cell |
DNA | contains the genetic information that makes up the chromosomes |
cell wall | a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support and protection to the cell |
chloroplast | an organelle that captures energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy |
large central vacuole | stores water and helps give shape to the cell |
mitochondria | an organelle that converts energy into a usable form ATP |
ribosomes | an organelle that makes proteins |
endoplasmic reticulum (er) | an organelle that functions as a transportation system and moves materials around the cell |
cell membrane | a cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell |
nucleus | an organelle that provides instructions to the cell and contains the DNA |
cytoplasm | a jellylike fluid inside the cell that contains all of the other organelles |
cell | basic unit of life |
Eukarya Domain | includes all eukaryotic organisms |

Bacteria Domain | includes prokaryotes that humans come into contact with every day |
kingdom | 2nd largest taxonomic group |
taxonomy | the scientific study of how living things are classified |
binomial nomenclature | two-part scientific name |
autotroph | describes organisms that produce their own food, usually photosynthesis |
heterotroph | describes organisms that must consume other organisms for food |
