Lakes and Ponds
| Term | Definition |

| Lentic water | water that is not flowing |
| Pond | Bodies of water less than 1 acre |
| Lakes | Bodies of water greater than 1 acre |
| Photosynthesis | process where plants convert energy from the sun to sythesize foods |
| Detritus | Decaying matter |
| Littoral Zone | Shallow parts of a lake where sunlight can reach the bottom for plant growth |
| Limnetic Zone | Middle part of the lake, open-water zone. Too deep for sunlight to penetrate to the bottom |
| Photic Zone | Part of the limnetic zone that receives sunlight |
| Aphotic Zone | Deep water zone, no light for plant growth |
| Benthic Zone | Bottom of the lake, where bacteria and decomposers are dominate |
| Plankton | tiny, mostly microscopic organisms, free floating organsims |
| Filter Feeds | Organisms that have specializes mouth parts as adaptation to gills |
| Biodiversity | The greatest variety of life |
| Eutrophication | Process of excessive nutrient input and subsequent plant and algae growth |
| Anglers | people who fish |
| Stocked fish | fish that are added to a lake or pond |
