Part 2 of Chapter 10 Vocab.

TermDefinition
Centromere region of a chromosome where the two sister chromatids attach (the middle)
Chromatid one of two identical “sister” parts of a duplicated chromosome
Centriole structure in an animal cell that helps to organize cell division, specifically the microtubules to form spindle fibers that pull the chromosomes to the opposite ends for cytokinesis to occur.
Metaphase phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up across the center of the cell and spindle fibers are very dense
Anaphase phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move to opposite poles of the cell and the centromeres separate and the chromatids become individual chromosomes
Telophase phase of mitosis in which the cytoplasm divides and two identical cells form and cytokinesis occurs
Cyclin one of a family of proteins that regulates the cell cycle by activating CDK enzymes
Growth Factor one of a group of proteins that stimulate the growth and division of cells
Apoptosis process of programmed cell death, which is a method the body uses to get rid of unneeded or abnormal cells
Cancer disorder in which some of the body’s cells lose the ability to control growth, which results in the cell dividing uncontrollably and spread into surrounding tissues
Tumor mass of rapidly dividing cells that can damage surrounding tissue
