Biology Chapter 10B
Part 2 of Chapter 10 Vocab.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Centromere | region of a chromosome where the two sister chromatids attach (the middle) |
| Chromatid | one of two identical “sister” parts of a duplicated chromosome |
| Centriole | structure in an animal cell that helps to organize cell division, specifically the microtubules to form spindle fibers that pull the chromosomes to the opposite ends for cytokinesis to occur. |
| Metaphase | phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up across the center of the cell and spindle fibers are very dense |
| Anaphase | phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move to opposite poles of the cell and the centromeres separate and the chromatids become individual chromosomes |
| Telophase | phase of mitosis in which the cytoplasm divides and two identical cells form and cytokinesis occurs |
| Cyclin | one of a family of proteins that regulates the cell cycle by activating CDK enzymes |
| Growth Factor | one of a group of proteins that stimulate the growth and division of cells |
| Apoptosis | process of programmed cell death, which is a method the body uses to get rid of unneeded or abnormal cells |
| Cancer | disorder in which some of the body’s cells lose the ability to control growth, which results in the cell dividing uncontrollably and spread into surrounding tissues |
| Tumor | mass of rapidly dividing cells that can damage surrounding tissue |
