| Term | Definition |

| Alveoli | thin-walled air sacs where gas exchange occurs |
| Epiglottis | flap of cartilage that covers the airway when swallowing |
| Expiration | exhaling; occurs when the size of the thoracic cavity decreases |
| Inspiration | inhaling; occurs when the size of the thoracic cavity increases |
| Larynx | the voice box; houses the vocal cords |
| Pharynx | throat; area where air passes behind the nose and mouth |
| Bronchi | main branches off the trachea which carry air into the lungs |
| Lungs | large, spongy pair of organs in the thoracic cavity where gas exchange takes place in air sacs |
| Trachea | the windpipe; parts of the airway between the pharynx and the bronchi, supported with rings of cartilage |
| Pulmonary Ventilation | moving air into and out of the lungs; breathing |
