Animal Classification

QuestionAnswer
On what do biologists base their classification of organisms? On the similarities of organisms' features, such as appearance, cell structure, hereditary material, and means of getting food and reproduction.
List the seven levels of classification of organisms, from highest to lowest. Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.
What is a species? A single type of organism, capable of breeding with other members of its species to produce offspring like themselves.
The barn owl belongs to the genus Tyto and species alba. What is the barn owl's scientific name? Tyto alba.
What three features do all vertebrates have? All vertebrates have an internal skeleton made of bone or cartilage, a backbone, and a skull.
How does a trout's skeleton differ from a shark's skeleton? A trout's skeleton is made of bone whereas a shark's skeleton is made of cartilage.
What happens during metamorphosis in a frog? A tadpole grows legs, loses its gills and tail, and develops into an adult frog. In the process, it changes from a water dweller to an organism that is capable of living on land.
Why are reptile's eggs able to survive in dry places? The eggs have a soft shell that helps keep the young inside from drying out.
What two features do mammals have that other vertebrates do not have? Mammals have mammary glands to feed young and hair to hold in body heat.
Name two of the three animals that are classified as birds, but do not fly. Penguins, ostriches, and emus are classified as birds, but do not fly.
