QuestionAnswer
Element Any substance that cannot be broken down.
Compound Two elements combined.
Carbohydrate An energy-rich organic compound made of elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Lipid Made of carbon hydrogen, and oxygen.
Protein Made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen
Amino Acid proteins are made of small chemicals called these.
Enzyme An enzyme is a type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction.
Nucleic Acid Are very long organic molecules.
DNA Carries information through the cell
RNA Plays a role in the production of proteins.
Selectively permeable The cell membrane, that it lets only some substances can go through.
Diffusion Is the main method by which small molecules move across a cell's membrane.
Osmosis The diffusion of water.
Passive Transport The movement of materials a cell's membrane without using the cells energy.
Active Transport Using energy from the cell.
Photosynthesis Using sunlight to create food.
Autotroph Makes their own food
Heterotroph has to hunt for food.
Pigment A colored chemical.
Chlorophyll A green pigment in a chloroplast.
Stomata Small openings on a leaf.
Respiration happens in the mitochondria to breakdown food.
Fermentation The process when a cell breaks down a molecule.
Cell Cycle growth and division of a cell.
Interphase Before a cell divides.
Replication Making a copy
Mitosis Cell turns into two nuclei
Chromosome A doubled rod of cromotone.
Cytokinesis The final stage of the cell cycle.
