| chromatid | one of the two identical halves of a chromosome |
| cytokinesis | the cytoplasmic division of a cell at the end of mitosis or meiosis, bringing about the separation into two daughter cells. |
| haploid | having a single set of unpaired chromosomes. |
| meiosis | a type of cell division in sexually reproducing organisms that reduces the number of chromosomes in gametes |
| diploid | containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. |
| chromosome | a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes. |
| histone | any of a group of basic proteins found in chromatin. |
| sexual reproduction | Two parents produce offspring non-identical |
| asexual reproduction | only needs one parent, offspring is identical |
| sex chromosomes | a chromosome involved with determining the sex of an organism, typically one of two kinds. |
| crossing over | the exchange of genes between homologous chromosomes, resulting in a mixture of parental characteristics in offspring. |
| homologous | having the same relation, relative position, or structure. |
| autosomes chromosomes | one of the numbered chromosomes, as opposed to the sex chromosomes. |

| synapsis | the fusion of chromosome pairs at the start of meiosis. |
| cell cycle | series of events that takes place in a cell as it grows and divides. |
