TermDefinition
Biodiversity A description of the numbers of different species organisms in an environment
Population The number of organisms of the same species living in the same location at the same time.
Interrelationships The types of activities of dependencies that exist between individuals.
Types of Interrelationships (3 types) 1. Competitors 2. Predator/Prey 3.Herbivore/Producer
Producer an organism that produces its own energy-providing food
Herbivore an organism that eats plants.
Carnivore an organism that eats animals
Biomass The amount of living matter in an area
Trophic Levels 1.Producer 2. Primary consumer 3. Secondary consumer 4. Tertiary consumer
The 10% rule The observed fact that the chemical energy available to the next trophic level in an ecosystem is only 10% of the energy consumed by the previous trophic level
Heterotrophic Describes an organism that acquires its own energy-food by consuming another organism.
Autotrophic Describes an organism that produces its won energy-food usually through photosynthesis.
Carrying Capacity the maximum number of individuals of a specified species that can be supported by a specified environment.
