environment all the living and nonliving things that surround and affect an organism
ecosystem a community of organisms and the physical environment in which they live
habitat the place where an organism lives and can find everything it needs to survive
population all the organisms of the same kind that live together in an ecosystem
community all the populations of organisms that live and interact in an area
producer a living thing, such as a plant, that can make its own food
consumer a living thing that cannot make its own food and must eat others to survive
photosynthesis the process in which plants use energy from the sun to change carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen
food chain a series of organisms that depend on one another for food
decomposer a living thing that gets energy by breaking down dead or organisms and animal wastes
herbivore animals that eat only plants
carnivore animals that eat only meat
omnivore animals that eat both, plants and animals
erosion the process of moving weathered rock from one place to another
flood a large amount of water that normally covers dry land
drought a long period pf time with very little rain
biodiversity the variety of plants and animals that live in an ecosystem
