Biology Chapter 7C
Part 3 of Chapter 7 Vocab.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| *Cell Membrane | A semipermeable membrane that controls what goes in and what goes out, separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment, and is also known as “plasma membrane”. |
| *Cell Wall | Outer protective membrane that provides protection, made of cellulose, prevents water loss, and defines the shape and structure of the cell. |
| Lipid bilayer | Flexible double-layered sheet that makes up the cell membrane and forms a barrier between the cell and its surroundings. |
| Diffusion | Process by which particles tend to move from an area where they are more concentrated to an area where they are less concentrated. |
| Equilibrium | A state of balance between opposing forces or actions |
| Osmosis | Diffusion of H2O through a semipermeable membrane, from higher concentration to low concentration. (Diffusion of water) |
| Isotonic | When the concentration of two solutions is the same. |
| Hypertonic | When comparing two solutions, the solution with the greater concentration of solutes. (More solute, less water) |
| Hypotonic | When comparing two solutions, the solution with the lesser concentration of solutes. (Less solute, more water) |
| Facilitated diffusion | The transport of substances across a cell’s membrane from higher concentration to an area of lower concentration with the help of membrane proteins, such as channels and carriers. |
