| Semi-Permeable | Some substances are allowed enter but not others |
| Permeable | When all substances are allowed enter |
| Impermeable | When all substances are not allowed enter |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration |
| Active Transport | Movement of molecules of low concentration to high concentration requiring the use of energy |
| Osmosis | The movement of water, across a semi-permeable membrane, from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration |
| Plasmolysis | When the cell membrane shrivels away from the cell wall in a plant cell |
| Solvent | A liquid that dissolves other substances |
| Turgid | When osmosis causes water to move into a plant cell causing the cytoplasm and vacuole to swell and push against the cell wall |
