Cell movement

TermDefinition
Semi-Permeable Some substances are allowed enter but not others
Permeable When all substances are allowed enter
Impermeable When all substances are not allowed enter
Diffusion Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Active Transport Movement of molecules of low concentration to high concentration requiring the use of energy
Osmosis The movement of water, across a semi-permeable membrane, from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration
Plasmolysis When the cell membrane shrivels away from the cell wall in a plant cell
Solvent A liquid that dissolves other substances
Turgid When osmosis causes water to move into a plant cell causing the cytoplasm and vacuole to swell and push against the cell wall
Turgor Pressure The pressure of the cytoplasm and vacuole against the cell wall of a plant
