Photosynthesis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) | The nucleic acid involved in short term energy storage. The energy driver for life processes. Sometimes referred to as a recharged battery for the cell. |
| ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) | A hydrolyzed version of ATP. With only two phosphates attached, ADP is referred to as a depleted battery for the cell. |
| Photosynthesis | The process by which autotrophs use energy of sunlight to produce carbohydrates. |
| Heterotroph | Organism that obtains food by eating other living things |
| Autotroph | Organism that makes its own food |
| Photosynthesis | Energy from sunlight is used to make high-energy carbohydrates like sugars |
| Pigments | Light-absorbing molecules |
| Chlorophyll | The plant's principal pigment |
| Thylakoids | Sac-like photosynthetic membranes |
| Stroma | The fluid portion of a chloroplast, outside the thylakoids |
| NADP+ | High-energy electron carrier |
| Electron Transport Chain | A series of electron carrier proteins that shuttle high energy electrons during ATP-generating reactions |
| ATP synthase | Thylakoid protein that uses H+ ion concentrations to rotate and produce ATP |
| Calvin Cycle | The light-independent reactions of photosynthesis |
