Bio Ch. 6 Part 1 Basic Chemistry

QuestionAnswer
polar molecule having a positive end and a negative end
capillary action ability of water to move up thin tubes (as in the roots of a plant)
atom smallest unit of matter
element a substance that can't be broken down into simpler substances; made of only one type of atom
compound a substance composed of two or more elements chemically combined
covalent bond force of attraction between atoms due to shared electrons
ionic bond force of attraction between two oppositely charged atoms
chemical reaction bonds between atoms are formed or broken causing new compounds or molecules to be formed
mixture combination of substances in which the individual components retain their own properties and do NOT form new compounds
solution a homogeneous mixture in which one or more substances is dissolved in another substance
acid any substances that releases H+ when dissolved in water (has a low pH)
base any substance that releases OH- when dissolved in water (has a high pH)
pH measure of how acidic or basic a substance is
hydrogen bond weak bond formed between positively charged hydrogen atoms and other negatively charged atoms
ion atom with an excess charge due to gaining or losing electrons
chemical equation a shorthand way of writing what happens in a chemical reactions ; uses chemical formulas to express reactants and products
proton positively charged subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom
neutron a subatomic particle with NO charge that is found in the nucleus of an atom
electron subatomic particle with a negative charge that orbits in the energy levels outside the nucleus of an atom
suspension a heterogeneous mixture with large particles that settle out over time
colloid a heterogeneous mixture with medium sized particles that do not settle out over time
solvent the bulk of a solution; the substance that particles are dissolved in
solute particles that are dissolved in a solution
periodic table organizes elements according to their physical and chemical properties
reactants elements or compounds present at the beginning of a chemical reactions
products elements or compounds formed as a result of a chemical reaction
adhesion when polar molecules are attracted to other polar molecules
cohesion when polar molecules are attracted to themselves
homogeneous mixture a uniform mixture , that appears the same throughout
heterogeneous mixture a mixture with components that remain distinct; is not uniform throughout the mixture

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
